Failing Culverts
Culverts are critical to preventing flooding during normal and extreme conditions. Debris and sediment can clog culverts and drainage channels leading to failure. Culvert failures include soil erosion around the pipe; structural defects or physical conditions of the pipe; and evidence of slope failure. It is not always a slow and gradual process. Sometimes long heavy rains or other causes of extreme flow cause catastrophic failure of the culvert.
